LHS-Flashback

...1977-1978

Every year has its fads. 1978 was no different.

  • Star War’s invaded the screens and took America by storm with its T-shirts, comic books and Darth Vader masks.
  • Audiences cheered for “Rocky” the story of a no name boxer who gets a shot at the heavy weight title and gives the champ the fight of his life.

1978 was also a year of tragedy

  • Freddie Prinz, from Chico and the Man, committed suicide.
  • Elvis Presley, the King of Rock n’ Roll, left the nation in a state of shock after his untimely death.
  • America lost one of its most active and successful politicians when Hubert Humphrey finally bowed to cancer
  • The familiar face of Bing Crosby won’t be seen anymore either, but the clear voice that crooned “White Christmas” will live on forever.

Music continued, as always, to turn on the nation.

  • Debby Boone remained on the top of the Pop charts for 10 weeks with “You Light Up My Life”.
  • The Bee-Gee’s had the country turned into Disco’s by the thousands with their music from “Saturday Night Fever.”
  • Dolly Parton bounced her way into the top 10 with “Here You Come Again”.

In the Sport World

  • Leon Spinks defeated Muhammad Ali in perhaps the greatest upset in boxing history.
  • The Denver Bronco’s lost to the Dallas Cowboys in the Super Bowl.
  • The Vikings played a hecuva game against the Rams to advance to the NFC title game where they lost to Dallas in a hard fought game!

A little closer to home are the local Lakeville hot spots. You know them by heart: the Tastee Freeze, the Country Kitchen, Ole Piper, Burnsville Center, and the official restaurants of LHS lunch skippers: MacDonald’s and Burger King!

So much more happened - to make 1977-1978 totally unforgettable.

Yearbook poem by, Anita Anderson

I WON'T SAY GOODBYE

BECAUSE I'M NOT LEAVING.

YOU'VE TOUCHED ME TOO DEEP

FOR ME TO FORGET

WE GREW UP TOGETHER-

OUR MINDS AND HEARTS MATURED AND

CHANGED-

-UNNOTICED!

WE'VE GROWN FROM CHILDREN TO ADULTS

WITHOUT SAYING A WORD OR SEEING THE

DIFFERENCE.

NOW WE ALL STAND TOGETHER

SILENT IN OUR TEARS' THE FINALE

OF OUR DAYS TOGETHER.

WE DON'T NEED TO SPEAK-THE WORDS

FALL INTO PLACE AND ECHO BETWEEN OUR WET

EYES.

BUT I WON'T SAY GOODBYE-

I LOVE YOU; MY FRIEND-

AND YOU WON'T BE FORGOTTEN.

Anita Anderson

Those were the days...
